Blog #1: Bob Herbert Editorial & Newt Gingrich Video
In response to the Bob Herbert Editorial, I agree with his perspective on a needed civil rights movement in some aspects. I think there are many problems that we face as Americans that are largely rooted upon race. Specifically with blacks I think that ideas of white privilege and discrimination are still very prevalent even though they may not be expressed in the same ways as in the past. Now that it is 2012 there is still a very large disparity between African Americans and Whites. Until something revolutionary happens where everyone pushes towards equality, problems will continue.
Gingrich says "Blacks should want paychecks, not food stamps". I am not the most knowledgeable person about politics and the government, but statements like this are the reason that I have a low interest in following the republican race. Gingrich obviously is attacking blacks of the lower socioeconomic class and attempting to claim that that are too lazy for work and would rather get free food stamps. He does neglecting the fact that not only are blacks receiving food stamps, but so are people of other races. The poor have problems because they continue to struggle to make ends meet and never get to take a break. I believe he should go to the NAACP just to see how the whole situation turns out.

Good post. I agree with your comment that he ignores the fact that people of every color receive food stamps. Poverty is a big issue within our country. I would be extremely nervous if he became the President of our country, because he would not address this issue and continue to stereotype. I also agree with you that he should go discuss his idea with the NAACP, that would be very entertaining.
ReplyDeleteI completely agree with the food stamps post. Being African American, although I do use food stamps, I found myself to be offended by the statement. I would hate for him to become president because i can only imagine what other negative thoughts he believes about African Americans.
ReplyDeleteI agree with what you said about the food stamps. It is not just African Americans that have food stamps there are other races as well who may also to choose to live on them for the rest of their lives. What Gingrich should do is to talk with the NAACP as well as other groups to find ways to help families transition from food stamps to being able to take care of their families themselves.
ReplyDeletei agree with that a civil rights movement is need but i don't think it would be the right time for it because today most people are concentrated on themselves and their own well being. I feel that back in the 60's people were more willing to work collectively to accomplish something for the greater good. I feel that Gingrich showed how ignorant he is of the black community needs and he also showed how stereotypes still plague and shaped our society.
ReplyDeleteI agree that a civil rights movement is needed, and i also completely think that there is a never the right time for a revolution. No one is ever fond of being revolted against. However, I think many people would rather glaze over the problems an take the situation for what it is than continue with this already tiring struggle.
ReplyDeleteAs far as Gingrich is concerned, he not only negated to mention the fact that more than just the AA population is on welfare, but the ways in which AA got to where they are currently. (i.e. slavery). Americans tend to forget that slavery is in the not so distant past.
